Dumb cane is a common potted plant in Malaysia. It has a thick, green stems and is less than a meter high.The leaves are oblong, 25 to 30 cm long and spotted with white and light green.This plant originates from central and south America. Several species are found in Malaysia, growing wild, and as potted plants in homes and gardens.
All parts of the plant contain an extremely irritating juice. Its active toxic principle is protoanemonine.
Dumb cane can cause severe irritation and inflammation of the oral cavity when any part of the plant is chewed.It may cause fatal poisoning through suffocation, as a result of the swelling of the pharynx and larynx. Dumb cane is a cause of child injury, particularly to the eyes when its sap squirts onto the eyes while plucking this plant. It will result in intense pain, diffused oedema of the eyelids as well as large abrasions of the corneal surface.
